SOUGHING IN THE WIND

by Stuart Quine

ebb tide a thin rain darkens the sand
spring sunlight the blond heartwood of birch logs
pattering on dry leaves last night's libations
coastal town paperback carousels soughing in the wind
sickle moon broken on the steps of the weir
white rice in a white bowl winter sunlight
autumn evening a pale moth drops from the corkboard
an aimless day stripping seeds from the cotton grass
moonrise the far ridge nippled with cairns
swallows on a wire the sky darkens towards evening
